Africa Bambataa – Godfather of Hip Hop Culture &

World Renowned DJ

he Godfather of Hip Hop Culture. Knowledge. Wisdom. Understanding. Freedom. Justice. Equality. Peace. Unity. Love. Respect. Work. Fun. Economics. Mathematics. Science. Facts. Faith. Life. Truth.

Reborn on Planet Earth sometime between 1957 and 1960, the man born as Kevin Donovan was just another child surviving with his family in the ghettos of America. In time, his experiments would radically change New York City. As a rebellious youth running the streets, he was a gang member and eventually a division leader of the notorious Black Spades, a crew that virtually dominated the streets of New York City. Afrika Bambaataa took his status in the Black Spades seriously and eventually decided to elevate the concept into a community organization that preached self-defence and personal empowerment.

Forming ‘The Organization’, which was a performing group of friends, he threw successful parties all over the city. He was christened the notorious “Master of Records” for his uncomparable collection of vinyl from every genre of music: rock, disco, funk, soul, country, and so much more. Nearly a year later, he renamed the group “The Zulu Nation”, inspired by the African tribe of the same name. Shaka Zulu Kings and Queens were the b-boys and b-girls that built the legacy with Afrika Bambaataa around New York City.

Bam soon after created the SoulSonic Force, which consisted of members from the ever-expanding Zulu Nation. He started recording with virtually every pioneering deejay and emcee of the day, creating timeless electro-funk masterpieces with a variety of record labels, including Tom Silverman of Tommy Boy Records.

Since the early 1980’s, Afrika Bambaataa has been a peaceful leader, a pioneer, a godfather, a creator, and a legend to hip hop culture while it has grown into the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. His records are numerous, his travels are global, his influence is immeasurable, and the respect due to be given to him, is without equal. He has worked with a who’s who list of artists, some of which include George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Boy George, Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, and the legendary James Brown. He has produced some of the most important pieces of wax in the history of the record player, including ‘Planet Rock’, ‘Looking For The Perfect Beat’, ‘Renegades of Funk’ and ‘Wild Style’ to name a few.

To attempt to encapsulate the contributions of Afrika Bambaataa in one piece of writing is to try and hear 30 years of hip hop history in one day. He has given so much art, energy, thought, and spirituality to the world This man is a living legend if there ever was one produced by hip hop culture.

TJ Chapman – TJs DJs

TJ Chapman has invested over 20 years into the music industry via a number of outlets. He began DJing in 8th grade during 1984 which led him to Florida A&M University in 1989. He has brokered over 11 deals for artists including DJ Taz ["That's Right" achieved gold status of 500,000 units sold on EMI] to labels such as Island and Warner Bros. As an A&R for So So Def, Lil Jon (yes, the mighty crunk one] utilized TJ’s services to help choose the proper Florida acts to lace the So So Def Bass All-Stars Vol. 1. This move earned TJ his first of four gold plaques [500,000 copies sold for Trick Daddy, Trina, and others] and became the precursor of five platinum plaques [1 million copies sold for Alicia Keys, Ying Yang Twins, Ice Cube, Priority, and No Limit Records]. Chapman has also been the manager, through his imprint Karizma Entertainment, for numerous acts including Crazy Legs ["Happy & U Know It"], Prince Raheim ["Loose My Money"], Beatmaster Clay D ["Gimme A Bottle"] and Total Kaos ["Mo Money"].But, his true mark on the world has come through his primary business, TJ’s DJ’s Record & CD Pool.

TJ has taken full advantage by always staying ahead of the game by utilizing his talented ear for that “next” record. When he finds it, he makes sure the world knows about it. He cleverly uses the Tastemakers Only DJ Conference and new technology such as emailing MP3s, posting and learning of new music through his website [www.TJsDJs.com] to spread the word. Look to TJ Chapman’s work with the Ying Yang Twins’ “Wait [The Whisper Song]” or T-Pain’s “I’m Sprung” to see viral DJ promotions through MP3s in action. Plus, through Chapman’s guidance, TJ’s DJ’s became the first urban record pool to offer CDs for DJs [lately, a common practice], as well as being a caretaker for the more traditional vinyl. Today’s nationally known acts such as David Banner ["Like A Pimp"], Lil Jon [producer and former member of TJ's DJ's], T.I. ["24s"], Khia ["My Neck, My Back"], T-Pain ["I'm Sprung"], Pretty Ricky ["Grind On Me"] and a host of others owe a great deal to TJ and his DJs for breaking their music when nobody else gave them a chance.

Personal Quote:”It’s all about relationships”

Herb Kent Godfather Urban Radio

Herb Kent is an urban radio pioneer. He is a voice of the community, a father, a friend, and a living history lesson. To many Chicagoans, Herbert Rogers Kent, the Cool Gent, The King of the Dusties and The Honorary Mayor of Bronzeville stands for all these things and more. As one of the most important figures in Chicago radio history, Herb Kent has not only been able to entertain and inform listeners on his weekly radio show, he has also opened up many doors for African Americans. Simply put, Herb Kent is a Chicago treasure and a bankable commodity.

Growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the Ida B. Wells housing community, a young Herb Kent displayed an early interest in radio when as a teenager; he built radio equipment, including his own set of microphones, from surplus World War II parts. Kent’s strong desire to learn as much as he could about the radio industry was eventually realized at the age of 16 when he was accepted into the highly competitive WBEZ Radio Workshops. From his early start at WBEZ, Kent went on to join a local community theater group known as the Skyloft Players.

Young and eager to learn, Herb performed on stage and soon realized that many of the skills required to be a successful stage actor applied to radio as well. Kent’s early theatrical training would later help develop such popular radio characters as, “The Wahoo Man,” “Gym Shoe Creeper,” and “The Electric Crazy People.” “I brought theater of the mind to radio,” says Kent. In 1949, Kent received his first paid radio job at WGRY in Gary, Indiana for $35 dollars a week. WGRY at that time had only two radio personalities. With Herb being one of two DJs, he was able to learn every aspect of putting a radio show together from producing, writing, and interviewing, to polishing his own on-air presence on twelve-hour shifts, seven days a week. Back in the fifties, Herb Kent’s first fan club was formed and the nickname, Cool Gent was born.

Around that same time Herb coined the term, “dusty records” to describe old-time favorite hits. “The dust in the grooves makes them crackle,” said Kent. Throughout his radio career working at stations like, WVON and WJJD, Herb Kent has interviewed many of today’s music legends including, DukeEllington, Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye just to name a few. Kent even gave career advice to a young man with his own dreams for success in the entertainment industry, Soul Train creator Don Cornelius.

In addition to his accomplishments as a radio personality, Kent has been an active community and civil rights leader. He has spent many years serving as a role model to the African American community by encouraging young people. “Stay in school and avoid gang involvement, that was my theme, ” stated Kent. In the 1960’s, during the height of the civil rights movement, Herb hosted a program with Stevie Wonder, for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last visit to Chicago.

Ironically, it was also Kent who after the assassination of Dr. King, took to the airwaves to calm rioters on Chicago’s West Side in the late 60s. For his many years of service and dedication to the community, the City of Chicago has bestowed numerous honors upon Kent, among them, a street named in his honor, “Herb Kent Drive” and Honorary Mayor of Bronzeville. In 1995, he was inducted into the Museum of Broadcasting’s, Radio Hall of Fame.In the late 90’s Kent ventured into local television as the host of the popular dance show called, “Steppin’ At Club Seven”, later to be renamed “The New Dance Club.”

Today, despite a very busy and sometimes hectic broadcast schedule hosting two highly rated shows on WVAZ FM, Herb shows no sign of slowing down. Kent is a contributing writer for N’DIGO Magazine, and lectures to communication students at Chicago State University. So what’s new for the millennium? Learning digital music formats, new computer skills, and taking the world of Herb Kent on the internet with the creation of his own new web site in the near future, just to name a few. Looking back over his incredible life and broadcast career, Kent says, “Radio has sustained me, and has really brought me through some hard times. It has been a rock for me; it’s the love of my life.”

DJ OG RON C – Advisory Board Member

Ronald Coleman aka DJ OG Ron C began his DJ career at parties in his northside neighborhood of 5th ward Houston, TX in the 9th grade. In the 12th grade he got a job on the first street team for local Houston radio station Magic 102FM. By graduation Ron C, had earned a grant to attend college at The University of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas to study communication where he also worked as an on air personality at KBWC 91.1. But Ron would bypass college, preferring a more direct route to radio at leading Houston urban station 97.9FM The Box in promotions as an intern. In ’94 Ron C was given a paid position at 97.9FM which was the same year he met Michael “5000” Watts who had also been given a DJ gig at the station, who was releasing “party tapes”, the equivalent of mixtapes today. The year was 1994 and a new subgenre of rap that had been birthed by DJ Screw on the south side of Houston had begun to spread to the north side. Ron C, self-proclaimed “screw head”, teamed up with Watts to release screwed and chopped tapes draped in the slowed down styles of their south side counterparts. In ’95, The Swishahouse was founded as a joint venture between the two DJ’s. DJ Screw would let local south side MC’s rap over his tapes and the Swishahouse would soon grow and give the same opportunities to rappers on the north side. In ‘97 Ron C and Watts opened the teen club called The All Star. Freestyle contests would be held to harvest the city for its talent. Chamillionaire, Slim Thug and Paul Wall attended these contests and would later become members of The Swishahouse. In ’99 Ron C temporarily left radio to release the independent Swishahouse album entitled “The Day Hell Broke Loose” with his co-ceo Mike Watts. The Houston classic would go on to scan over 100k copies. The following year Ron inked an album deal with head 97.9 DJ Madd Hatta’s label Paid-n-Full Records and released “Southern’s Finest” which has scanned over 40k copies and featured the hit single “In Love with my money” by Chamillionaire and Paul Wall, That same year, after teaching Paul Wall to DJ, OG Ron C turned over his half of ownership of the label he helped found and joined the list of members who had left the Swishahouse due to the handling of business. In 2002, after another brief stint at another station Ron C left radio for good and formed the Wreckin’ Yard as a record label. “A DJ is supposed to break records…that’s what I do, bring you the next hottest thing. Radio just wasn’t satisfying that need at the time and that’s what I had set out to do with The Swishahouse and what I continue doing thru my independent CD’s, F-ck Action series, and my other mixtapes.” Over the next 3 years Ron continued his critically acclaimed F-ck Action Series composed of screwed & chopped RnB. He later went on to be nominated for 4 Justo Awards, the grammy of DJ awards, winning 2 Justo’s for “Best Dirty South Mixtape DJ” in 2004 & 2005. Also In 2004 OG Ron C became the official DJ for platinum selling Universal artist Chamillionaire, putting in work as show DJ and offering his skills as exclusive mixtape DJ for Chamillitary mixtapes. In ‘05 he received his first Southern Entertainment award for the best screwed and chopped CD. He also released 2 independent CD’s; “Real Recognize Real” with his Brother Wood which sold over 20k and “Diamonds and Tattoos” with local artist Tow Down which sold over 20k. In 2006, OG Ron C, who has chopped over 100 independent albums to date, has taken home another Southern Entertainment award, this time for best screwed and chopped slow jam, continues releasing works in his over 200 mixtape series, continues spreading the name of his Wreckin’ Yard Records/Gizzle Entertainment. thru appearances on 106 and Park, Rap City as well as other DJ’s Mixtapes, and continues keeping DJ Screw’s legacy alive by offering his own brand of audio intoxication to artists such as Master P, Chingy, 8ball and MJG, 36 Mafia’s Prophet Posse, Devin tha Dude, Z-Ro, the Ghetto Boys, Lil’ Flip, Pitbull, and Chamillionaire’s “The Sound of Revenge: Screwed and Chopped” which has sold more than any other screwed and chopped CD on a major label. OG Ron C has also appeared in XXL, The Source, Ozone, Murda Dog, Down Magazine as well as an assortment of other publications. In 2007, after returning home from touring with platinum recording artist Chamillionaire and receiving his 3rd Southern Entertainment Award for his legendary f-action R&B mixtape series, OG Ron C decided to start a conference to give back to the music & entertainment industry, The R. (resources) E. (education) A. (accessibility) L (longevity) Houston Music Conference which is done annually in Houston, Texas during the month of may. After being honored by mayor Bill White of Houston for outstanding working in the community, OG Ron C would connect with GO DJ Hi-C who is the founder and CEO of the GO DJ’s Music Group to become president of the organization. “That’s what I’m really trying to do…continue Screw’s legacy with my own style of ‘chopped not slopped’…and help keep screws legacy going another 15 years and spreading screw music, as well as my company name all over the world”

KD AKA HAN D MAN Advisory Board Member

KD on the grind since 1990 in the Hip Hop genre. Started a rap posse, in Dallas Texas, with three homies. BOSS was the name of the posse. They were young, hungry, Army rats and DeVry grad’s. KD was one of the producers and the DJ providing the cuts, scratches and mixxes during the live stage show . KD the organizer, front man, street promo team and make the party live DJ.

* Well that was then here is now for KD. After the release and failure of BOSS’ 1st and only rap album (lack of promotions from label) KD moved on to take another spin at the music industry.  KD started an entertainment music management company with 2 credit cards, his dream and carasmatic personality. Meaning he could flow game and knowledge with the best in the business. MUSGROW ENTERTAINMENT is the name.  1999 KD signed his 1st R&B singer from Philadeliphia (Latin). YUP things were looking good for this young man.  In May of 1999 as part of his promotions tour for the new R&B female act, Black Bike Week, KD and the DT Biker Boyz headed to Myrtle Beach SC. The promotions and concerts were a success and how sweet it was for KD. AHH SHIT KD on the rise. The next Barry Gordy? I’LL BE BACK!! Is what he said, you know KD, to Black Bike Week May 2000. And so he did another off the chain promotion and artist debut for KD’S MUSGROW ENTERTAINMENT.  KD stayed on the GRIND, working full time as a DT firefighter and Paramedic. Oh don’t get it twisted this brother has faith in GOD, brains, looks, muscles and attitude (all in that order).  Boy this fine ass brother was on the come up. In case the ladies are wondering what he looked like 5′8” 180lbs of sugar brown packing all muscles and chizled. The nicest, respectful, easy going anything goes attitude. Let’s not forget a BIKER BOY humping one of the fastest, sweetest Suzuki GSR (SRAD) 750. And Yes he was a player!  What was to come for KD in 2001 only he knew. KD was the brother in Dallas Texas, you want the hottest party, find the jumping spots, the finest enterage of femmes KD had or knew where to go to get it. Atl., Ga. was next on his list to break off some of his mixture Southwest meets Southeast Flava.

* April 2001……. Tragedy struct for KD. The near end of this story goes…..

On highway I-30 in Dallas Tx. KD was rounding an on ramp at 120 miles an hour (you know d’em ride or die brothers) he never finished the curve and didn’t see it coming.  By the grace of GOD KD woke up from a coma 35 days later in ICU at Baylor University Hospital.  His prognosis was not good. KD had severe head injuries, internal injuries, multiple facial fractures, crushed throat, four broken ribs, punctured lung, broken jaw in three places, his mouth wired shut and his right arm and hand were paralyzed.  Would he survive, did he want to? After another 30 days with support, prayers and love from his family, friends and fans KD walked out of the hospital to an uncertain future physically, personally and for his dream, Musgrow Entertainment. He spent 12 months in rehab and surgeries.

* 2002 Where Is He Now! KD resurfaces in ATL, GA. Looking to learn to live life physically challenge, he went through the entire steps four different times to receive disability, only to be turned down four times. It’s a lot that the people of the world do not know about receiving disability and KD can give you the juice. It’s a bad business when you are unable to work because the employer looks at you as disable but the government closes their eyes to that fact and looks at you saying “you can work somewhere”. It all comes down to your race, age, and education (FOR MORE INFO. ABOUT COLLECTING DISABILITY – ASK KD – PLEASE). So KD only had a few options, he chose to grind it out in the mixtape game – Better, Faster, the One Arm Bandit he adapted the new name of KD aka Han D Man (Handy Man) but still able to blend together the best tracks unheard for new and upcoming artists to keep the party crunk.

* In 1999 KD had met this hot ass chiqita in Myrtle Beach she was an Atl. Ga. Peach. He was sprung of course and had been making trips to the Dirty South to lock her down. She wanted the house, car and ice, he wanted to play a little more but wanted his peach to eat to. Little miss peach broke it off with KD 28 April 2001 (the same day he had his accident).  As the good Lord would have it, Ms. Ga. Peach hung in there with KD, a true RIDE OR DIE chic. Now Mrs. KD, she got his back and holds it down for one of the hottest, newest, mix tape DJ in the Dirty South.

* KD has been blessed and proves to be more dedicated and determined to make his mark as a DJ and a music and entertainment CEO. He has been featured in many music webmags and articles. KD was voted mixtape DJ of the month for July 2004 by grind-mode.com, nomitated mixtape DJ of the year January 2005 & Mixtape Series of the year January 2008 by southernentawards.com, & has appeared in several magazines (kd-handyman.com for more info.).

* KD and Musgrow Entertainment have produced and promoted one the most wanted mixtape series in the South featuring some of the hottest Hip-Hop models. WORLD WIDE 1 to the current WORLDWIDE 37.

KD also secured a distribution deal with RnD Distributors (Suavehouse Records (8Ball & MJG, & Tela) Houston Tx.) and put out his artist (Latin) nationwide.

* Where can and how can DJ KD fans cop his latest mixtape hitz? The Home base is kd-handyman.com but you can get his cd’s at most stores that carry mixed cd’s – from the U.S., Canada, Japan, & Germany. You can also find KD hosting the # 1 radio show “The Worldwide Show” on Royal Radaio (royal-radio.com) every Friday from 4pm – 5pm (est), Vision Radio (visionradio.us) every Saturday from 9pm – 11pm (est), Aol, Sirius Satellite, & Dish Network (floating schedules)

DJ AMES  “UK MIXTAPE MESSIAH”

DJ AMES

‘UK MIXTAPE MESSIAH’

There are many DJ’s throughout the world with immense talent and an individual style, yet there are few like the UK’s very own DJ AMES.

Born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire back in 1983 it was not until DJ AMES reached the age of 18 he decided to try his hand at the craft of being a DJ.He started attending Music classes where local Kids could go to learn more about music techniques, the craft behind making a good track but best of all where they could learn the skills to become a DJ! Within 3 month he had built a collection of vinyl any serious DJ would envy and had performed at local council run events in his area. Unfortunately within a year of DJ AMES using the facilities at the local Music classes the centre was closed down. This put him right back to where he started yet still with the ambition to succeed. By 2005 the vinyl collection was firmly back out and AMES began mixing demo’s for his friends, created an account with myspace.com and the rest as they say is history. By early 2006 DJ AMES had released his first CD titled “Raw Talent volume 1” the CD featured tracks from talented artists throughout the UK with a strong Hip Hop, Grime and R’n’B theme. Over the year he used the resources available to him to his best advantage, gaining links within the Music industry in the UK and the USA. To date DJ AMES has worked with the likes of Flipmode Squad, Grand Hustle/P$C, Aphilliates Embassy ENT (AMG) and has more than 200+ mix-tape releases to his name. His Mix-tapes feature a varied blend of talented artists within the UK and the USA. With the genre’s including everything from the grittiest UK Grime to the Southern style American Hip Hop. DJ AMES has endured trials and tribulations to build a name and a career as a DJ within Hip Hop and giving up has never been an option. With his 2nd album released in summer 2007 DJ Ames made sure that his name would no grow within the music industry and do whatever it took to do that. With 2008 starting off well for DJ Ames it gave him the chance to travel to ATL to work with the Aphilliates music group and help support there UK movement aswell as help his name grow within the south of the US. With 2008 half way through DJ Ames managed to earn his biggest accomplishment to date and that was get himself nominated at the Southern Entertainment Awards (SEA’s) which is a US dominated event and is a big accomplishment for any DJ across the water to break through. With 2009 just beginning DJ Ames has already started off the year in a big way. His series of UK mixtapes are receiving good feedback and his monthly UK mix on www.focusonthedj.net is receiving a lot off download and good feedback. He is also featured in the March / April edition of Hip Hop Connection Magazine. Expect to see DJ Ames at various clubs around this UK this year, In March 2009 DJ Ames became the first UK DJ to win a Southern Entertainment Award (SEA) in the ‘Best Host On A Mixtape’ category.

DJ Aaries – Advisory Board Member

DJ Aaries got his start out as a DJ doing college, high school, and house parties. Those experiences started out as him opening up for other DJ’s, but progressively grew week by week to the point where he was hosting parties himself all over South Carolina. “I like having the people participate, it ain’t just me playing the music, and people dance” when asked what contributes to his early success as a DJ. As his name grew in South Carolina as one of the biggest DJ’s, DJ Aaries decided to relocate West to Atlanta to put himself into a better position to be able to expose artists. Moving to Atlanta seemed like an easy move due to the amount of Hip-Hop that was in the city, but coming from a slower paced area such as South Carolina proved to provide minor problems. “It was so crazy because I didn’t know any of the music. When I got here I was still playing songs that was dated for the clubs that were here.” He began to work with Atlanta independent artists, with some receiving radio play, award nominations, and going on to become a success. While all of that was happening with the artists, his name continued to cultivate throughout Atlanta and in the South. With the growing popularity as a DJ, DJ Aaries has managed to be a part of BET’s “Rap City” multiple times and is one of the new faces of Roc-A-Wear with the “I Will Not Lose” campaign. He also started “Hood Hard TV,” which currently airs in eight markets and the internet. The show is based around providing advice to artists and in a sense is similar to the classic TV show “Yo! MTV Raps.” He also co-organized with Word On The Streets Magazine the “Hood Hard Day Conference,” which is free to DJ’s and Media. The conference has had attendees such as DJ Kid Capri, Remy Martin, and Wendy Day. DJ Aaries also takes enormous pride in creating the Hood Hard DJ’s, an alliance of 150 DJ’s. They do not service music like record pools, but actually are more hands on with artists. To date the group has had their hands on in breaking records such as Nappy Roots “Good Day” and V.I.C.’s “Get Silly” which was their first official record as Hood Hard Hitmakers.
